My Story Collection

Last updated 2017-01-20

I've started assembling some of my favourite narratives, so that others can enjoy them too. The first two deal with meteorological phenomena; new stories will be added in due course.

I've also added a few of my own narratives. They are all true. I'm hoping you'll have as much fun reading them as I've had writing them (and in some cases living through them—although it didn't always seem like great fun at that particular moment!).

Other People's Stories

The 1999 Eclipse, as seen from southwest England. Narrated by Ken Osborne G4IGO. [published 1999]

Inside a Texas tornado, an account of a Forties storm by a trained US Army weather observer. [published 1951]

The LMF theory, to explain why helicopter pilots are not the same as aeroplane pilots. [published 2006]

My Own Stories

How I discovered America. [2001]

A Weekend to Remember, the story of how I became Powderman. [2001]

Conquering the Midmar Mile, the story of my attempts to learn to swim—properly. It's also available in Afrikaans. [2013]

A memorable flight from Pretoria to Turkey, Algeria and back. The story is told in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet, in Afrikaans and English. The view through the front windshield of a high-flying jet can drive even the most unemotional of us to poetry... [2014]

My trip to New England in 2014, including side trips to Labrador and St Pierre. The narrative includes WRTC 2014 and the ARRL Centennial Convention. [2014]

A wild Goose chase, my trip to Alaska and the midwestern USA during 2015. The trip includes some time in Florida, Alaska, Yukon, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa, and takes in the Oshkosh AirVenture, the world's largest airshow. The climax of the trip was flying a 1944 Grumman G21 Goose on the Alaskan lakes. The story was published in the October 2015 issue of World Airnews, and is reproduced here with their kind permission.[2015]

Going Dutch, my trip to the Dutch Caribbean in 2015, including how I climbed the highest mountain in Holland. [2015]

Making a Meal of it, my trip to northern Australasia and Southeast Asia in 2016. It includes the story of our Spratly Island operation as 9M0Z. [2016]

Yeti's Race Reports, my chronicles of race conditions, mostly in South Africa's North Gauteng region. I started regular entries at the end of 2016; only a few assorted reports date from before then. I'm hoping to keep it updated more regularly in future.[2016]
